question on religion

whom soever believes in me shall have everlasting life. a line a remember I remember once someone telling me that religion is of man.That this is used to divide and control man is this true I ask as there are some that are strict and some that bend to social norms even though the book says otherwise. this begs the question what is the purpose of religion if there is god does it divide or unite?. I await your answer.
